If your someone like me, who has a laptop that uses wireless internet and your hard drive is very small and you need extra room. But in another room you have a desktop with a big hard drive and it also uses wireless internet. Have you ever wanted to move files from your laptop to your desktop without having to burn a CD/DVD or upload files to the internet? Well I will teach you how to use your wireless adapters to send files from one computer to another.
Alright first off we need to know the name of the computer we want to add files to. To do this we go to
Start->Control Panel->System then we click on the "Computer Name" Tab:
In this case my computers full name is xps-m1210. Now your going to want to write this down if your computers are both desktops. If you have a laptop all you need to do it take it with you! Ok now the next step is we need to tell the computer that we want to allow other computers to view its files & even change them.
To do this we go to
Start->My Computer-> right click on C: drive and then click on "Sharing and Security" :
Alright now Windows is going to try to get smart with you. You need to click on the link shown below:
Now we need to tell the computer what we want to share. In this case we will be sharing everything. So we have to give it a name. "C". Now if you want to add files to the computer, you have to click on "Allow network users to change my files". Shown below:
Alright we are all done with the computer we want to add files to. How do we get access to it though? On your laptop or other computer we need to add the new PC to our network places. To do this we go to our laptop or 2nd pc,
Start->My Network Places on the left side you will see "Network Tasks". Click on "Add Network Place", shown below:
The wizard will open up, hit next and you will come accross this screen asking you to pick. Pick the 2nd one:
Now for security reasons your PC doesnt broadcast itself for everyone to see, so you have to tell what your laptop or PC what its looking for. First you MUST put 2 back slashes "\\" then your computers full name then one more slash "\" then the folder "C". So it should look like this
Code:
\\YOUR COMPUTER NAME HERE\FOLDER
If confuses you just look below.
Hit next and your done!
